ADULT LEARN TO SAIL COURSE
Sept. 8, 22, 29, Oct 6, 13, 20
Privateer Sailing Education Foundation (PSEF a Non-Profit) was established to provide management of all aspects of sailing education. It functions as a separate organization symbiotically with PYC. Since PYC’s inception in 1940, teaching adults to learn to sail has been a part of the mission statement. PSEF: delivers education for adults; operates a Summer Camp for Children; is home to a Youth Racing Team; as well as working with the Physically Challenged.
PSEF offers spring and fall classes to take advantage of the most favorable sailing weather in the Chattanooga area. Class size is limited to 6 students.
The Adult Learn to Sail class is designed for adults who have never sailed before, or have had limited experience. The course teaches the art of sailing, a sport you can enjoy participating in for your entire life. It includes the following:
- Rigging and care of a sailboat
- Nautical terminology
- Rules of the road
- Leaving the dock correctly
- Sailing to windward, leeward, and on a reach
- Returning to the dock
- Reading the wind, including direction and velocity
- Basic knot-tying
The course is taught on Lake Chickamauga using the facilities of Privateer Yacht Club, Located at 4713 Privateer Rd, Hixson TN. We use boats owned by the foundation, such as the Flying Scot (a 19-foot Dinghy for 2-3 people), Fusion (13 feet, for 1-2 people), and member owned keelboats.
Instructors are trained and certified by US Sailing, our national sailing authority.
In the event of cancellation due to weather we will attempt to re-schedule.
